Invisible Monsters by Chuck Palahniuk

Yesterday I finished another Palahniuk book - Invisible Monsters. This was my fifth Palahniuk book, and I found it to be by far his most twisted and wild one. I can’t even begin to imagine what it’s like to be inside his head. The story started a little slow, but the last two thirds was full of great surprises that were both unanticipated, yet that made perfect sense - not unlike the surprise in The Sixth Sense.

The story revolves around a former model, who lost most of her face when it was shot off while she was driving one day. While in speech therapy, she meets a trans-sexual who teaches her how to live with her hideous defect. The two survive by traveling the country and visiting open houses of homes that are still occupied in order steal prescription drugs for both consumption and sale. Eventually, they are joined by the boyfriend of the main character’s former best friend/the main character’s former fiance - who she nows hates both of.

No one in the story is really who they say they are. None of them do what they do for the reasons they initially lead you to think. The story is so twisted that you’ll love each surprise as it arrives and crave the next. To say more would ruin it!

Completing this book leaves me with three Palahniuk fictional titles left to read - Diary, Haunted and Rant (just released in May). I have nothing specific queued up on the reading list now or any on the shelf - feel free to lend me something!
