Mmmm – Glass… (Good times, good times…)

15 years. That’s how long it took my brother to finally agree to send me the picture below.

The picture is from June 6th, 1993, when my brother Matt and I were playing pool in the building behind the house that had been turned into our rec room, (commonly referred to within the family as “the other building”). Matt left the other building to grab a drink from the house. Like any good brother would, I locked the door behind him so he wouldn’t be able to get back in when he returned.

Stuck outside, Matt put his lips to the window of the door, mocking me with fish lips – but on this day, I would have none of it. I took the pool cue in my hand & jabbed the butt toward the window, planning to scare him. The only problem was that the cue didn’t stop before it hit the window. The butt hit the glass where Matt’s lips were. It went through. Matt stumbled backwards. He spit up some blood. We feared the worst and after a quick trip to the emergency room (Matt was a regular those days), it was confirmed – Matt had swallowed a piece of glass.

You can see it in the X-ray below. It’s an inch and a half long, the sliver of white below the ribs and above the pelvis.

Swallowed Glass

While Matt & I got in plenty of arguments & broke plenty of windows as kids, never had we combined the two. This particular incident was so bad that not a single word was ever said to me by my parents. I didn’t even have to pay for the window – it just took 15 years for Matt to forgive me…
